Maker The manufacture of bagpipes had traditionally been a craft practised by Scottish artisans solely from the their workshops in Great Britain. Until the 1950's very few of these trained pipe makers had ventured outside the two main Scottish cities of Glasgow and Edinburgh. Certainly the lure to apply their trade in the New World did not exist. Piping was well established in Canada and the United States. North Americans were required to order direct from the Scottish suppliers. In 1951, Jack Dunbar, a Scottish craftsman trained in the ancient art of bagpipe making emigrated to Canada. It wasn't until the Canadian centennial in 1967 that Jack decided to offer restoration and repairs to bagpipes. The quality of the craftsmanship became widely known, and soon the small shop was producing practice chanters, pipe chanters and full sets of pipes. Demand for his services grew and the small business was beginning to experience overwhelming growth. Unique to the industry, Jack Dunbar has been instrumental in the introduction of plastic to the piping world. This need has come about due primarily to the climatic conditions and their adverse effect on the traditional exotic woods such as African Blackwood, Cocus Wood, Ebony and Partridge Wood. From Jack Dunbar's early days apprenticing with Messrs. Peter Henderson Ltd., of Glasgow, Scotland, to the modernized manufacturing plant in St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada: the firm of J Dunbar Bagpipe Maker Ltd. is proud of their quality and craftsmanship. All bagpipes are hand-crafted to exacting standards set by Jack Dunbar. Jack is one of a select group of craftsmen trained under the tutelage of Peter Henderson Limited, then of Glasgow, Scotland. As such the precise dimensions of the famous "Henderson drone" are maintained. J. Dunbar Bagpipes come complete with a L&M hide bag, velveteen bag cover, wool cords and tassels and fully reeded (chanter and drones). Also, all pipes are water trapped to prevent excess moisture. Gortex (Canmore) bags, plastic drone reeds, tartan covers and silk cords are all available as upgrades. Prior to delivery all pipes are professionally tied and tested. As an alternative to Blackwood, J. Dunbar Bagpipe Maker Ltd. provides Imitation Blackwood pipes which are more durable than Blackwood and resist cracking due to changes in atmospheric conditions. The drones can be washed with no chance of cracking, warping or twisting. This material makes the pipes more "hygienic". Our imitation Blackwood pipes can be installed with our "hempless seal," thus avoiding the inconvenience of hemp. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
